摘要:Endogenous viral elements (EVEs) are common genetic passengers in various protists. Some EVEs represent viral fossils, whereas others are still active. The marine heterotrophic flagellate Cafeteria burkhardae contains several EVE types related to the virophage mavirus, a small DNA virus that parasitizes the lytic giant virus CroV. We hypothesized that endogenous virophages may act as an antiviral defense system in protists, but no protective effect of virophages in wild host populations has be...

摘要:Hypoxia signaling influences tumor development through both cell- intrinsic and - extrinsic pathways. Inhibiting hypoxia- inducible factor (HIF) function has recently been approved as a cancer treatment strategy. Hence, it is important to understand how regulators of HIF may affect tumor growth under physiological conditions. Here we report that in aging mice factor- inhibiting HIF (FIH), one of the most studied negative regulators of HIF, is a haploinsufficient suppressor of spontaneous B cel...

摘要:Considerable progress has been made in the experimental studies on laser-inducedterahertz (THz) radiation in liquids. Liquid THz demonstrates many unique featuresdifferent from the gas and plasma THz. For example, the liquid THz can be efficientlyproduced by a monochromatic laser. Its yield is maximized with a longer driving-pulseduration. It is also linearly dependent on the excitation pulse energy. In two-color laserfields, an unexpected unmodulated THz field was measured, and its energy dep...

摘要:The ubiquitous RNA chaperone Hfq is involved in the regulation of key biological pro-cesses in many species across the bacterial kingdom. In the opportunistic human path-ogen Klebsiella pneumoniae, deletion of the hfq gene affects the global transcriptome, virulence, and stress resistance; however, the ligands of the major RNA- binding protein in this species have remained elusive. In this study, we have combined transcriptomic, co- immunoprecipitation, and global RNA interactome analyses to c...

摘要:Exposure to loud noise triggers sensory organ damage and degeneration that, in turn, leads to hearing loss. Despite the troublesome impact of noise- induced hearing loss (NIHL) in individuals and societies, treatment strategies that protect and restore hearing are few and insufficient. As such, identification and mechanistic understanding of the signaling pathways involved in NIHL are required. Biological zinc is mostly bound to proteins, where it plays major structural or catalytic roles; how...

摘要:Blood metabolite levels are affected by numerous factors, including preanalytical factors such as collection methods and geographical sites. These perturbations have caused deleterious consequences for many metabolomics studies and represent a major chal- lenge in the metabolomics field. It is important to understand these factors and develop models to reduce their perturbations. However, to date, the lack of suitable mathematical models for blood metabolite levels under homeostasis has hinder...

摘要:Climate change is a global concern for all life on our planet, including humans and plants. Plants' growth and development are significantly affected by abiotic stresses, including adverse temperature, inadequate or excess water availability, nutrient deficiency, and salinity. The circadian clock is a master regulator of numerous developmental and metabolic processes in plants. In an effort to identify new clock- related genes and outputs through bioinformatic analysis, we have revealed that C...

摘要:Atomically dispersed catalysts are a promising alternative to platinum group metal catalysts for catalyzing the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), while limited durability during the electrocatalytic process severely restricts their practical application. Here, we report an atomically dispersed Co - doped carbon-nitrogen bilayer catalyst with unique dual - axial Co-C bonds (denoted as Co/DACN) by a smart phenyl- carbon- induced strategy, realizing highly efficient electrocatalytic ORR in both al...

摘要:The Ebola virus causes hemorrhagic fever in humans and poses a significant threat to global public health. Although two viral vector vaccines have been approved to prevent Ebola virus disease, they are distributed in the limited ring vaccination setting and only indicated for prevention of infection from orthoebolavirus zairense (EBOV)- one of three orthoebolavirus species that have caused previous outbreaks. Ebola virus glycoprotein GP mediates viral infection and serves as the primary target...

摘要:Hsp70, Hsp90, and ClpB/Hsp100 are molecular chaperones that help regulate proteostasis. Bacterial and yeast Hsp70s and their cochaperones function synergistically with Hsp90s to reactivate inactive and aggregated proteins by a mechanism that requires a direct interaction between Hsp90 and Hsp70 both in vitro and in vivo. Escherichia coli and yeast Hsp70s also collaborate in bichaperone systems with ClpB and Hsp104, respectively, to disaggregate and reactivate aggregated proteins and amyloids s...
