摘要:Across the animal kingdom, visual predation relies on motion- sensing neurons in the superior colliculus (SC) and its orthologs. These neurons exhibit complex stimulus preferences, including direction selectivity, which is thought to be critical for tracking the unpredictable escape routes of prey. The source of direction selectivity in the SC contested, and its contributions to predation have not been tested experimentally. Here, we use type- specific cell removal to show that narrow - field ...

摘要:Magnetic fields in protoplanetary disks are thought to play a prominent role in the formation of planetary bodies. Acting upon turbulence and angular momentum transport, they may influence the motion of solids and accretion onto the central star. By searching for the record of the solar nebula field preserved in meteorites, we aim to characterize the strength of a disk field with a spatial and temporal resolution far superior to observations of extrasolar disks. Here, we present a rock magneti...

摘要:Identifying the two substrate water sites of nature's water- splitting cofactor (Mn4CaO5 cluster) provides important information toward resolving the mechanism of O - O bond formation in Photosystem II (PSII). To this end, we have performed parallel substrate water exchange experiments in the S-1 state of native Ca-PSII and biosynthetically substituted Sr-PSII employing Time- Resolved Membrane Inlet Mass Spectrometry (TR-MIMS) and a Time- Resolved O-17- Electron- electron Double resonance dete...

摘要:Rapid advances in nucleic acid therapies highlight the immense therapeutic potential of genetic therapeutics. Lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) are highly potent nonviral transfection agents that can encapsulate and deliver various nucleic acid therapeutics, including but not limited to messenger RNA (mRNA), silencing RNA (siRNA), and plasmid DNA (pDNA). However, a major challenge of targeted LNP- mediated systemic delivery is the nanoparticles' nonspecific uptake by the liver and the mononuclear pha...

摘要:Inner ear hair cells are characterized by the F- actin-based stereocilia that are arranged into a staircase-like pattern on the apical surface of each hair cell. The tips of shorter-row stereocilia are connected with the shafts of their neighboring taller-row stereocilia through extracellular links named tip links, which gate mechano- electrical transduction (MET) channels in hair cells. Cadherin 23 (CDH23) forms the upper part of tip links, and its cytoplasmic tail is inserted into the so-cal...

摘要:Non -Newtonian fluids can be used for the protection of flexible laminates. Understanding the coupling between the flow of the protecting fluid and the deformation of the protected solids is necessary in order to optimize this functionality. We present a scaling analysis of the problem based on a single coupling variable, the effective width of a squeeze flow between flat rigid plates, and predict that impact protection for laminates is optimized by using shear -thinning, and not shear -thicke...

摘要:The intricate interplay between biomechanical and biochemical pathways in modulating morphogenesis is an interesting research topic. How biomechanical force regulates epithelial cell tubulogenesis remains poorly understood. Here, we established a model of tubulogenesis by culturing renal proximal tubular epithelial cells on a collagen gel while manipulating contractile force. Epithelial cells were dynamically self- organized into tubule - like structures by augmentation of cell protrusions and...

摘要:Creating tissue and organ equivalents with intricate architectures and multiscale functional feature sizes is the first step toward the reconstruction of transplantable human tissues and organs. Existing embedded ink writing approaches are limited by achievable feature sizes ranging from hundreds of microns to tens of millimeters, which hinders their ability to accurately duplicate structures found in various human tissues and organs. In this study, a multiscale embedded printing (MSEP) strate...

摘要:Integrating multimodal neuro- and nanotechnologyenabled precision immunotherapies with extant systemic immunotherapies may finally provide a significant breakthrough for combatting glioblastoma (GBM). The potency of this approach lies in its ability to train the immune system to efficiently identify and eradicate cancer cells, thereby creating anti- tumor immune memory while minimizing multi- mechanistic immune suppression. A critical aspect of these therapies is the controlled, spatiotemporal...
