摘要:We investigate a core challenge in building multi-stakeholder institutions for collective action: Constructive ambiguity-the deliberate use of imprecise language on a contested issue-is often needed to overcome conflict and enable agreement among parties. Yet, this initially enabling characteristic may complicate implementation when ambiguous commitments must be translated into concrete actions. To examine this challenge, we draw on an eight-year study of the Bangladesh Accord for Fire and Bui...

摘要:How do community characteristics shape organizational responses to social issues? While existing research has focused primarily on firm-level attributes or issue characteristics, we argue that a community's social structure systematically affects how external issues penetrate and resonate locally. We develop a theory of community permeability that links three structural features-network closure, segregation patterns, and issue connectedness-to both the local salience of social issues and subse...

摘要:Existing research suggests that experts often protect their professional autonomy by rejecting lay clients' feedback or passing it to intermediaries (e.g., managers and agents). However, the rise of review platforms and disintermediated marketplaces has empowered clients to publicly share challenging feedback, and experts' defensive tactics may further erode public trust in their services. In contrast, our qualitative study of 67 porcelain artists in China reveals that experts can effectively ...

摘要:Organizational theory has predominantly studied elites, yielding significant insights but creating a narrow perspective on management practices and organizational dynamics. This essay argues that we can advance organizational theory by incorporating a comprehensive focus on populations marginalized across multiple dimensions-economic, educational, geographic, demographic, cultural, and social. Addressing these marginalized groups is crucial as they face barriers, stigma, and discrimination, wh...

摘要:Industrial clusters are an important driver of economic growth, but regions with comparable resource profiles do not necessarily produce similar clusters. We propose that religion may play an important role in the spatial arrangement of industries and can explain why regions with similar resources do not produce similar clusters. We advance a theory predicting a suppressive effect of religion on the development of industrial clusters in morally controversial industries. We argue that in such i...

摘要:It is well known that hiring practices that treat job seekers differently by race contribute to racial disparities in employment. Yet, practices that treat job seekers equivalently may also contribute to racial disparities if there are pre-existing racial differences among the applicants. We focus on employers' prominent practice of using job seekers' work histories to make inferences about their suitability for jobs. Scholars and practitioners alike have long assumed that work histories are r...
