摘要:Past research has produced contradictory insights into how prior collaboration between organizations-their relational embeddedness-impacts collective collaborative performance. We theorize that the effect of relational embeddedness on collaborative success is contingent on the type of success under consideration, and we develop a typology of two kinds of success. We test our hypotheses using data from Crunchbase on a sample of almost 11,000 U.S. start-ups backed by venture-capital (VC) firms, ...

摘要:Contact with beneficiaries has been described as an important job characteristic for shaping perceptions about the social value of work; however, little is known about how to navigate experiences in which contact with beneficiaries is negative, which can explicitly undermine the conclusion that work is socially valuable. We draw from two tenets of social information processing theory to propose that negative contact with bene-ficiaries has a dual effect on employees. Whereas negative contact m...

摘要:Research has shown that most ventures fail, yet there has been limited work on investors' views of entrepreneurs who have failed in the past. We address this gap and call attention to an innate asymmetry between past failure and success. This asymmetry arises because success requires skill and luck jointly, whereas failure materializes due to either lack of skill (mistakes) or bad luck (misfortune). We ask: Are investors failure-averse and discount a failed entrepreneur even in the presence of...

摘要:Considering creativity as a journey beyond idea generation, scholars have theorized that different ties are beneficial in different phases. As individuals usually possess different types of ties, selecting the optimal ties in each phase and changing ties as needed are central activities for creative success. We identify the types of ties (weak or strong) that are helpful in idea generation and idea elaboration and, given this understanding, whether individuals activate ties in each phase accor...

摘要:Over the past century, conscientiousness has become seen as the preeminent trait for predicting performance. This consensus is due in part to these employees' ability to work with traditional 20th-century technology. Such pairings balance the systematic nature of conscientious employees with the technology's need for user input and direction to perform tasks-resulting in a complementary match. However, the 21st century has seen the incorporation of intelligent machines (e.g., artificial intell...

摘要:Despite decades of research on social mobility and wage disparities, it remains a puzzle why people from lower-class families earn less than people from upper-class families even when similar in education and occupational prestige. Taking a sociocultural perspective on social class, we argue that a key contributor to the class pay gap is that people from upper-class origins tend to work in occupations with greater autonomy, whereas their lower-class counterparts tend to work in occupations tha...

摘要:This research explores the relationship between upward mobility and voice. We build hypotheses and find evidence that rather than being imprinted with a lower sense of efficacy, the upwardly mobile possess a high internal sense of efficacy and are likely to speak up. However, this positive pathway to voice for the upwardly mobile is offset by managers being more inclined to solicit voice from those who come from, and have remained in, higher social class positions. We test our hypotheses in th...

摘要:This study develops and tests a thesis derived from the law of requisite variety. We contend that the greater the experiential variety of a top management team, the more likely it is that the complexity and consistency of the firm's competitive repertoire will be calibrated to relevant external variety. In addition, for firms that achieve such calibrated repertoires, we expect that their financial performance will be superior to that of their peers. We then integrate these arguments and examin...

摘要:This paper focuses on investment decisions in nascent, seed-stage startups, where information is scarce and uncertainty is intense. Entrepreneurship literature has shown that investment is a function of the investor-startup pair; some studies have investigated startup characteristics, while others have focused on investor traits. We complement extant work by studying factors beyond the investor-startup pair; namely, incidental contextual factors such as changes in the physical environment. Dra...
