摘要:Digital regulations are often portrayed as barriers to digital firms' internationalization because they hinder digital firms' market penetration and fragment their global operations. We argue, however, that regulations may play a different role for digital firms that internationalize through virtual presence. Leveraging the European Union's (EU's) General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) as context, we examine how the GDPR affects digital products' penetration in the EU and whether it drives ...

摘要:Using a sample of 639 cross-border bank acquisitions in 65 countries from 1995 to 2019, we examine the spillover effects of such acquisitions on the systemic risk of non-target (peer) banks in host countries. We find that cross-border bank acquisitions lead to increases in peer banks' systemic risk. We evaluate competing hypotheses related to moderating institutional factors and to the underlying channels at work. Our findings show that CB bank acquisitions lower peer banks' market and pricing...

摘要:Using a global dataset, we document that an increase in country-level climate vulnerability, measured by exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity to the negative effects of climate change, results in an increase in firm-level stock price crash risk. Among these components, adaptive capacity exhibits the most prominent and persistent explanatory power. We confirm our main findings using an instrumental variable approach and exploring two regulatory shocks that tend to generate worldwide or ...

摘要:Cross-border nonmarket strategy-multinational enterprises' choice of nonmarket strategic actions in pursuit of profitability in a host market-is an essential part of international business. Recent calls for research assert, however, that very little is known about how multinational enterprises choose among cross-border nonmarket strategies. We thus propose that egalitarianism-one type of home-country informal institution-is a key predictor of an important set of cross-border nonmarket strategy...

摘要:Populist politicians employ rhetoric and policy actions aimed at disrupting a country's institutional environment that undergirds private investors' assets. In this study, I describe how governments led by populists interfere in countries' institutional environments and how this may affect the viability of firms' investments. I suggest that populists' interference capacity to disrupt institutions may increase with weaker constraints on executive power and with more time in power, and the capac...

摘要:This article examines whether circular economy (CE) strategies enhance firm resilience after systemic shocks. Building on the natural resource-based view, we argue that CE investments made before COVID-19 can strengthen resilience by converting sustainability-oriented capabilities into absorptive and adaptive capabilities. Yet this conversion is not automatic: it depends on firms' ability to manage three tensions between efficiency and redundancy, continuity and reconfiguration, and strategic ...

摘要:Country-level influences matter for CSR performance. While prior studies have uncovered what individual country-level variables predict firms' CSR performance, we know little about how much of the variance in CSR performance is explained by systematic influences at the country level. We conduct an abductive variance decomposition study to estimate the proportion of CSR variance explained at the country level, relative to the firm, industry, and regional levels, and how cultural environments in...

摘要:In this retrospective, we expand on theorizing about institutions and social entrepreneurship (SE) as presented in our Decade Award-winning 2015 article. Our 2015 paper developed the institutional configuration perspective, which considers joint and interaction effects of formal and informal institutions. It organized disagreement about how formal institutions shape SE, contrasting the institutional voids and institutional support perspectives. In this retrospective, we introduce a revised hie...

摘要:Longstanding debates persist about the impact of new technologies on firms, particularly as it relates to internationalization. Some scholars suggest that digitalization will enhance the benefits of export activity by facilitating connections with partners and customers. Others, however, suggest that digitalization will simply fail to live up to the hype-or perhaps even worse. This debate is especially relevant for SMEs given that export activity is the primary route to global markets for such...

摘要:Digital platforms often expand internationally faster than public institutions can evolve, raising the question of how they sustain operations in weak institutional environments. I theorize governance capability, defined as the firm-level ability to design, implement, and enforce rules regulating participant behavior, as a dual institutional substitute. When home-country institutions are weak, platforms develop governance capability to fill domestic institutional voids (substitution at home), ...
