摘要:How do startups influence the neighborhoods in which they locate? Using data from the Greater London area, we find a positive association between growth-oriented entrepreneurship and both demographic and organizational changes in these communities. Older, less educated residents are replaced by younger, more educated ones. Restaurants become more expensive and more diverse. We also demonstrate that growth-oriented entrepreneurship predicts a subsequent rise in residential real estate prices. T...

摘要:Secrecy is critical for knowledge protection during innovation, but it can hinder knowledge creation. Despite considerable research into when and why organizations employ secrecy, our understanding of how secrecy is managed during the research and development (R&D) process remains limited. I examine how secrecy emerges, manifests, and evolves across the R&D process through a historical case study of the making of the atomic bomb in the United States during World War II. I uncover a model of ad...

摘要:Extant research finds that workers often develop negative or ambivalent perceptions of organizational monitoring and thus engage in acts of resistance. However, this work largely assumes that organizational monitoring occurs in isolation, overlooking how the growing presence of external monitoring may fundamentally alter how workers experience organizational monitoring. To investigate this dynamic, we conducted a qualitative study of a U.S. police department where officers faced both organizat...

摘要:Do women benefit more from gender-homophilous (all-women) or genderheterophilous (mixed-gender) groups in remote training? Existing theories offer no clear answer, as remote training environments disrupt the social architecture that enables peer effects-weakening not only the collaborative structures that encourage cross-gender exchange but also the interpersonal cues that foster same-gender bonding. We argue that remote training environments reveal a key mechanism through which all-women peer...

摘要:Existing evidence demonstrates that an organization's diversity climate can enhance its bottom line. Though some scholars theorize potential mediators to explain these effects, recent meta-analytic and literature reviews conclude that much remains unknown regarding both why diversity climate influences outcomes and how sociocultural factors within and beyond the organization may shape its implications. We propose that unit-level diversity climate stands to produce more uniformly positive affec...

摘要:Why do women and men approach the same work differently? Prior research across occupations shows that men tend to emphasize quantity and produce more, whereas women prioritize quality. Researchers have attributed these differences to individual-level factors, such as gender-specific preferences, caregiving responsibilities, and evaluator biases. We propose that organizational practices, specifically production incentives and quality monitoring, also influence these patterns. Using data from th...

摘要:Organizations often struggle to deploy specialized expertise where it creates the most value. We argue that specialized roles help address this challenge by codifying expertise into formal positions that function as allocative infrastructure, channeling work to appropriate professionals. We test this argument in Brazilian maternity wards that introduced a new specialized nursing role. Using data on more than 15 million births and a difference-in-differences design, we show that the introductio...

摘要:A commonly held perspective in the cultural tightness literature is that cultural tightness tends to negatively impact creativity. Yet some findings indicate that this relationship is not strictly negative and that a more nuanced perspective should be considered. Drawing on social information processing (SIP) theory and social role theory, we build theory on how the perception of organizational cultural tightness can increase creativity for some employees, but not for others. Specifically, we ...

摘要:Rating systems are a common governance tool on two-sided platforms. Research suggests that, via indirect network effects, rating systems benefit participants on both the rating side and the rated side. However, participants on the rated side may not always recognize the benefits of the rating system and may respond negatively to its introduction. The rating side may anticipate the rated side's negative reactions and react negatively as well, especially when the rated side holds more power over...

摘要:When a temporary team faces an unfamiliar task environment, it should particularly benefit from including members who have collaborated before. Although several studies have made this prediction, it has not been supported empirically. We reconcile this discrepancy by distinguishing between prior collaborations in tightly versus loosely coupled roles, defined by the degree of interdependence among collaborators during prior work. Both forms of prior collaboration can help teammates communicate ...
