摘要:We examine the effects of organizational identity on the competitive dynamics of firms. Identity increases the awareness, motivation. and capability to respond to competitors' actions within the firm's identity domain, defined as cognitive competitive space that holds psychological value for a focal firm's management. Because of the psychological and motivational importance of a firm's identity, we predict that the actions and reactions within an identity domain may not adhere to traditional e...

摘要:When is open innovation superior to closed innovation? Through a formal simulation model we show that an open approach to innovation allows the firm to discover combinations of product features that would be hard to envision under integration. However, when partners have divergent goals, open innovation restricts the firm's ability to establish the product's technological trajectory. The resolution of the trade-off between benefits of discovery and costs of divergence determines the best appro...

摘要:We extend research on the diffusion of corporate practices by providing a framework for studying practice variation during diffusion processes. Specifically, we theorize about how population-level mechanisms of diffusion link with organization-level mechanisms of implementation that lead to the adaptation of practices. We also identify technical, cultural, and political elements of fit (or misfit) between diffusing practices and adopters and analyze how the process of attaining fit across thes...

摘要:Building on research that suggests a negative relationship between repeat collaboration and team creativity, we propose that team mental models developed in earlier projects are likely to interfere with the processes that constitute creative abrasion: idea generation, disclosure/advocacy, and convergence. Suppression of these processes leads to less creative outcomes. We conclude by proposing that these negative effects can be mitigated by process and project charter interventions and by outsi...

摘要:Self-narratives-stories that make a point about the narrator-help people revise and reconstruct identities during work role transitions. We propose a process model in which people draw on narrative repertoires to engage in narrative identity work in role-related interactions. Using feedback from their interactions. they revise both the stories and repertoires. Successful completion of the transition is facilitated by enduring and coherent repertoire changes to express the new role identity.

摘要:Drawing on both Job Demands-Resources theory and contagion theory, we conceptualize cognitive. affective, and conative influences on expatriate work role and family role performance. We clarify expatriate adjustment by expanding the concept to capture family role adjustment and by mapping relationships among the forms of adjustment. We also highlight the mediating role of engagement for understanding the influence of adjustment on role performance, and we consider spillover across work and fam...

摘要:I develop a theory of the distinctive characteristics of professional service firms and their organizational implications. I identify three distinctive characteristics-knowledge intensity, low capital intensity, and a professionalized workforce-with which I propose a taxonomy of four types of knowledge-intensive firms whose varying degrees of professional service intensity generate different organizational outcomes. The analysis highlights the danger of conflating the implications of professio...
