摘要：We investigate the long-run impacts of Christian missions on female genital cutting (FGC) in Africa. Our empirical analysis draws on historical data on the locations of early European missions geographically matched with Demographic and Health Survey data on FGC practices of around 410,000 respondents from 42 surveys performed over a 30-year period in 14 African countries. 摘要：Access to microcredit has been shown to generate only modest average benefits for recipient households. We study whether other financial market frictions - in particular, lack of access to a safe place to save - might limit credit's benefits. Working with Kenyan farmers, we cross-randomize access to a simple savings product with a harvest-time loan. 摘要：Using unique information on firm level domestic outsourcing of manufacturing jobs by Indian firms, we propose two channels and their interaction as determinants of the fragmentation of production: import competition and labor market regulation. 摘要：This paper exploits unique survey data from Mali to validate an alternative approach to estimate the relationship between crop yields and inputs. The estimation relies on predicted objective crop yields that stem from a machine learning model trained on a random subsample of surveyed plots, for which crop cutting and self-reported sorghum yield estimates are both available. 摘要：Using both reduced-form methods and structural modeling, we identify the relationship between place-based policies and individual bargaining power in rural China. Exposure to economic zones significantly increases women's resource shares and reduces within-household inequality.
