摘要:Resilience research has extensively addressed how organizations cope with disruptive events and their immediate impact. The focus of this research has been on how organizations bounce back to a pre-disruption state. However, organizations are also challenged to bounce forward toward unprecedented and uncertain futures in the wake of disruptive events without losing sight of their pasts. In this article, we develop a trajectory model of organizational resilience that focuses on how actors proje...

摘要:Constituency-building is an important corporate political strategy that expands the scope of conflict by mobilizing stakeholders to pressure policymakers. Although prior studies of constituency-building have highlighted how enlisting stakeholders in political battles creates unique opportunities and risks, what has been overlooked is the importance of firms assembling strange bedfellows of economically and morally motivated constituents, sometimes called bootlegger-and-Baptist coalitions. Draw...

摘要:Although millions of employees traverse public space every day on their way to work, this public transition space has been overlooked in much of the management literature, even as public harassment that occurs in this space has increased in prevalence. We delineate the transition space between non-work and workspaces as a construct, building on theories related to work non-work borders, role transitions, and organizational space to explain how transition space harassment negatively impacts wor...

摘要:We explore how, and under which conditions, market institutions can spontaneously arise after an institutional collapse. Drawing on emergence theory, we develop a multilevel model of institutional emergence after an extreme collapse, where only the individuals' memories remain from pre-collapse institutions. We start with individuals seeking to transact, looking to decrease cost and increase trust in their transactions. At the micro level, the multiplication of transactions can trigger process...

摘要:We theorize about how CEOs' expressions of humor affect infomediaries' social evaluations of their organizations. Differentiating four types of CEO humor-(1) affiliative, (2) self-enhancing, (3) self-defeating, and (4) aggressive-we propose that each type induces distinct states of mind in infomediaries as well as attributions about the CEO. As our key idea, we then propose that the ultimate impact of CEO humor results from a combination of these primary effects; their (in)congruence with info...

摘要:The board of directors is the highest decision-making group in the organizational hierarchy. Yet, there remains considerable ambiguity as to what constitutes effective board decision-making, and even greater ambiguity as to how to achieve it. We conceptualize the board decision-making process as occurring in three phases-discovery, deliberation, and decision-and we introduce the concept of board decision synergy as a form of effectiveness applicable to this process. Board decision synergy occu...
