摘要:How firms capture value from their innovations has long interested strategy and innovation scholars. Prior work has focused on legal, economic, and social mechanisms for isolating knowledge from imitation as being crucial to this process. Our contribution extends this stream of research by identifying how design choices about the way knowledge is manifested (e.g., into routines, blueprints, prototypes, or products) can inhibit a counterparty's ability to imitate knowledge relating to a focal i...

摘要:Value in mergers and acquisitions derives from the synergistic combination of an acquirer and a target. We advance the existing conceptualization of synergy in three ways. First, we develop a theoretically motivated, parsimonious typology of five distinct sources of synergy based on two underlying dimensions: the level of analysis at which valuable activities occur and the orientation by which those activities are governed. The typology uncovers three novel synergy sources (relational, network...

摘要:Recent studies on the construction and use of small world representations in strategic decision-making under Knightian uncertainty say little about how such representations should be updated over the implementation phase. This paper draws on the psychology of reasoning to take a step toward answering this question. We begin by theorizing small world representations and how the scenario spaces they contain are constructed and may be updated over time. We then introduce two well-known heuristic ...

摘要:In this article, I develop a theoretical framework to explain rivalry for narrative control between members of the media and transgressing organizations. I do so by integrating and advancing key insights from competitive dynamics and crisis management research. The first part of this framework conceptualizes the unique tensions, actions, and reactions that characterize rivalry for narrative control following organizational transgressions and distinguish it from other forms of rivalry. The seco...

摘要:We critically assess the comparative efficiency advantages and disadvantages of capitalist versus cooperative firms using team production as a frame of reference. We revisit the debate about such (dis)advantages in the context of open team production, a situation in which teammembers are both internal and external to the firm. In contrast to the case of traditional (closed) team production, which focuses on the problem of monitoring team members within the firm, open team production requires i...

摘要:We explain how a firm's relational strategies impact conflict risk in the broader network of societal relations. To make this contribution, we highlight how managerial decisions are evaluated, and acted on, not only by the firm's stakeholders, but also by others attentive to their group's access to, and control over, economic, political, and social assets in comparison to other groups with whom they are in conflict. We show that, when firm actions that form or break ties in its stakeholder net...
