摘要:This paper investigates the impact of monitoring and market regulation on the illicit market for stolen goods, focusing on the association between junkyards and auto theft. I explore the effects of a state-level regulation implemented in S & atilde;o Paulo in 2014, which enhanced supervision of the market for auto parts. I find an 8.11% decline in auto theft for municipalities presenting at least one junkyard specialized in auto parts compared to the control group. Additionally, I provide evid...

摘要:Despite their limited resources, low-income households in developing countries spend considerably on festivals and ceremonies. How do they afford this, and how do such events affect their economic outcomes? I address these questions using a coming-of-age ceremony in Latin cultures called a quincea & ntilde;era. To overcome the endogeneity associated with ceremony timing, I exploit a unique feature of quincea & ntilde;eras that only households with a 15-year-old girl have the ceremony. With rep...

摘要:One out of two working children worldwide works in hazardous conditions. We study the effects of a law that introduced benefits and protections for child workers and temporarily lowered the de facto legal working age from 14 to 10 in Bolivia. We employ a difference-in-discontinuity approach that exploits the variation in the law's application to different age groups. Work decreased for children under 14, whose work was newly legalized and regulated under the law, particularly in areas with a h...

摘要:We document variations in real income for high-skilled, low-skilled, and rural migrant households across Chinese cities. Using comprehensive data on land parcel transactions along with individual data for land development and household expenditure, we construct a city-specific housing cost index and assess how it varies across locations. All three components of housing costs-unit land prices, land share in construction, and housing share in expenditure-decrease from city centres to the periphe...

摘要:I study the consequences of voter-buying, defined as the act of inducing outsiders to fraudulently transfer their voter registration across jurisdictions in exchange for private benefits. Specifically, I explore the effects Brazil's 2007 voter re-registration reform which was intended to curb voter-buying. Exploiting a discontinuity in the targeting of municipalities assigned to the reform, I examine the response of mayoral elections, public expenditures and socioeconomic outcomes to the impos...

摘要:Across low-income countries, limited prospects for high-skill employment and poverty push numerous college graduates into jobs which do not require a college degree. These types of experiences maybe advantageous or detracting for the new graduates. To examine this issue, we conducted afield experiment in Burundi which elicited preferences of employers with respect to low-skill job experience of recent college graduates. We estimate the impact of signaling various types of low-skill experiences...

摘要:Study abroad migration is the fastest growing international migration flow. However, the college completion rates of students from low-income countries are often modest in OECD countries, raising the hypothesis that these migrants are poorly informed about the costs and benefits of their decision. Our work tests this hypothesis by running a lab-in-the-field experiment where graduating high school students in Cape Verde are faced with incentivized decisions to apply for college studies abroad. ...

摘要:This paper shows that local labor market power provides a rationale for the higher prevalence of selfemployment in developing economies relative to developed economies. Labor market power creates occupational mismatch-too many workers choose self-employment relative to the competitive benchmark. Because of labor market power, workers underinvest in skills that increase paid employment productivity and overinvest in those that enhance self-employment productivity. Under certain conditions, this...

摘要:We study whether program impacts can be estimated using a combination of digital trace data and machine learning. In a randomized controlled trial of cash transfers in Togo, endline survey data indicate positive treatment effects on food security, mental health, and perceived economic status. However, estimates of impact based solely on predicted endline outcomes (generated using trace data and machine learning, which do successfully predict baseline poverty) are generally not statistically si...

摘要:This paper explores the local-level impacts of oil exploitation on human capital accumulation in Colombia, a resource-rich developing country. We provide evidence based on detailed spatial and temporal data on oil exploitation and education, using the number of wells to measure treatment intensity at the school level. To derive causal estimates, we rely on an instrumental variable approach that exploits the exogeneity of international oil prices and a proxy of local oil endowments. The results...
