摘要:Graphene and two-dimensional transition metal carbides and/or nitrides (MXenes) are important materials for making flexible energy storage devices because of their electrical and mechanical properties. It remains a challenge to assemble nanoplatelets of these materials at room temperature into in-plane isotropic, free-standing sheets. Using nanoconfined water-induced basal-plane alignment and covalent and pi-pi interplatelet bridging, we fabricated Ti3C2Tx MXene-bridged graphene sheets at room...

摘要:The discovery that our immune system not only provides constant surveillance against the development of neoplastic disorders but may also be artificially reprogrammed to recognize and eradicate established malignancies has transformed our perspective on oncology treatment and prognosis. The exploitation of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) has paved the road to antigendirected targeting of cancerous cells and led to the development of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells. This revolutionary cell...

摘要:The Bonn Challenge was launched by the German government and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in 2011 with the goal of restoring 350 million ha of degraded and deforested landscapes by 2030. Although there is acknowledgment that forest landscape restoration (FLR) promoting tree planting should not cause the loss or conversion of open, nonforested ecosystems (i.e., they should not be afforested) (1), concerns have been raised that the focus on tree-based restoration com...

摘要:On the television program MythBusters, which aired on the Discovery Channel from 2003 to 2016, the hosts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman tested popular myths and ideas arising everywhere from folklore to popular culture, designating them as either busted or confirmed. The show used engaging and entertaining variations on the scientific method to answer questions such as whether you get wetter when walking or running in the rain or what the fastest way is to board an airplane. I hear frequently f...

摘要:Telomerase, the enzyme that maintains telomeres at natural chromosome ends, should be repressed at double-strand breaks (DSBs), where neotelomere formation can cause terminal truncations. We developed an assay to detect neotelomere formation at Cas9- or I-SceI-induced DSBs in human cells. Telomerase added telomeric repeats to DSBs, leading to interstitial telomeric repeat insertions or the formation of functional neotelomeres accompanied by terminal deletions. The threat that telomerase poses ...

摘要:Oh, now I get it, my colleague said. That's why you put so much effort into your exams. Over lunch with a fellow faculty member, I had been sharing the struggles I experienced years ago as a student with exam anxiety. Her comment surprised me a bit. But it got me thinking about why, since starting out as a professor 7 years ago, I have prioritized easing my students' nervousness before exams. I realized she probably had a point: My experiences as a student helped me understand what I could do ...
