摘要:This paper investigates how dual-purpose firms-organizations that pursue both profit and social objectives-strategically design their product lines in markets where traditional profit-maximizing firms may imitate their behavior. We find that consumer heterogeneity plays a nonmonotonic effect on the ability of dual-purpose firms to differentiate themselves from profit maximizers, which, in turn, influences firms' product offering strategies and consumer welfare. When consumer heterogeneity is m...

摘要:We examine a firm's personalized pricing (PP) strategies in markets where consumers are uncertain about product quality. In such markets, prices serve not only as a tool for price discrimination but also as a means of conveying quality information to consumers. We reveal that a firm faces a tradeoff between adopting PP to better price discriminate among consumers and not adopting it to signal its high quality. We find that a high-quality firm should adopt PP only when its product quality is kn...

摘要:We study an agricultural supply chain in an emerging economy, where farmers make land allocation decisions among alternative crops and have the option to sell their harvest either in a side market or directly to a processing plant, and where a government-mandated minimum price guarantee (MPG) is in place. Our study examines a range of pricing strategies that the processing plant can employ to favor a protected crop and the utilization of the processing plant. We begin by considering the Benchm...

摘要:This paper studies the impact of product sharing on competing manufacturers under a platform's different quality entry barrier strategies. We build a game-theoretic analytical model to examine the strategies of two manufacturers: A high-quality manufacturer producing a high-quality product and a low-quality manufacturer producing a low-quality product. We explore three markets: The N-S market where the sharing market does not exist, the L-S market, and the H-S market, where the platform sets l...

摘要:We study the sample complexity of offline learning for a class of structured Markov decision processes (MDPs) describing the inventory control system with fixed ordering cost/setup cost, a fundamental problem in supply chains. We find that a naive plug-in sampling-based approach applied to the inventory MDPs leads to strictly lower sample complexity bounds compared to the optimal bounds recently obtained for the general MDPs. More specifically, in the infinite-horizon discounted cost setting, ...

摘要:In light of the recent frequency of global emergencies that result in overseas delivery delays and cost surges, many multinational brands consider reshaping their sourcing configurations by incorporating local suppliers that may be of lower quality than globally selected counterparts. In this global context, pre-committed emergency renegotiation clauses have gained recognition as a common practice in international commercial contracts, which enable contractual parties to adjust key terms, such...

摘要:An important global trend today is the rise of the secondhand market powered by consumers' desire for sustainability and affordability, as well as a surge in the use of digital resale platforms. While marketing research has primarily focused on the success of new product markets, scant research has tried to understand secondhand markets. To advance knowledge in this area, we investigate how product design innovation affects the value of used products in secondhand markets. Specifically, we dev...

摘要:Do firms voluntarily disclosing emissions have lower levels of greenhouse gases in their in-house and outsourced operations? We examine this question using Scope 1 and upstream Scope 3 emission data reported by firms or estimated by S&P Trucost from 2002 to 2020. Our empirical results reveal that voluntary disclosing firms tend to have lower levels of internal emissions (i.e., Scope 1 emissions) and yet higher levels of external emissions from upstream suppliers (i.e., estimated upstream Scope...

摘要:Peer-to-peer (P2P) platforms facilitate the direct exchange of goods, services, or financial transactions between individuals without the involvement of intermediaries. To maintain trust among their user bases, these platforms must implement stringent access controls to determine which users are eligible to participate in their digital marketplace. We argue that when a platform transitions from private to public ownership, it may be incentivized to strategically lower its access standards and ...

摘要:The erosion of professional ethics in medicine has severe consequences for patients and society. Existing approaches often rely on retrospective analysis and lack the precision and timeliness needed to effectively identify and mitigate risks. Although patient online reviews offer a unique opportunity to proactively detect ethical issues by providing candid, unsolicited feedback on healthcare experiences, few studies have empirically established the link between patient reviews and ethical brea...
