摘要:Problem definition: U.S. nursing homes allocate federal licensed beds among three categories: Medicare-dedicated beds, Medicaid-dedicated beds, and flexible beds for both populations. This article studies how nonprofit and for-profit nursing homes make bed allocation decisions and how this affects access to care for the economically disadvan-taged Medicaid population. Methodology/results: Analyzing U.S. nursing home data dur-ing 2012-2017, we observe that nonprofit nursing homes on average had...

摘要:Problem definition: This paper investigates a periodically reviewed distribution inventory system where a central warehouse replenishes multiple retailers facing uncertain demand. Only moment information about demand at each retailer is available, and unmet demand is backlogged. Methodology/results: We develop a robust multiperiod inventory model for the system based on the central limit theorem-based uncertainty set and transform the inventory planning problem into a transportation problem. W...

摘要:Problem definition: We study a dynamic nonbipartite stochastic matching problem, where nodes appear following a type-specific independent distribution and wait in the system for a given sojourn time. This problem is motivated by applications in ride-sharing and freight transportation marketplaces and is related to other on-demand marketplaces. Methodology/results: We study the asymptotic properties of two widely used policies, batching and greedy, by analyzing a single-pair case and then conve...

摘要:Problem definition: The bilateral rating display system (BRDS), popularized by ride-sharing platforms, shows riders' ratings to drivers when the driver receives an order dispatched by the platform. This contrasts with traditional business settings where only the service providers' ratings are displayed to customers (unilateral rating display system (URDS)). Although BRDS allows drivers to make more informed decisions, it also poses challenges, such as the potential for drivers to reject riders...

摘要:Problem definition: We study a rolling recruitment process in which applicants leave the system stochastically. Applicants arrive randomly over time, and each applicant is available for a random amount of time after they arrive. In each period, the recruiter must decide whether to stop or to wait. If the recruiter stops, he or she needs to determine how many offers to make and whom to make offers to, and the applicants who do not receive an offer will leave the system. If the recruiter waits, ...

摘要:Problem definition: Managers in digital ad agencies face the complex problem of setting prices for new ad campaigns, bidding for viewers on ad exchanges, and allocating them appropriately to campaigns. We have developed an analytical methodology for optimizing the agency's profits, with uncertainties in the arrival of potential viewers and new ad campaigns and in winning bids and obtaining viewer actions on ad exchanges. Methodology/results: The ad agency manages a series of contracts with adv...

摘要:Problem definition: This paper incorporates a piecewise linear structure into the utility-price relationship of the classic multinomial logit (MNL) model and studies the associated operations problems such as estimation and pricing. Methodology/results: The derived model is referred to as the piecewise MNL model. We study its model identification and further propose a maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) for its calibration by real data. Because the presence of inflection points, the log-likelih...

摘要:Problem definition: There has been a fierce debate among practitioners regarding ad blockers. On one hand, ad blockers are considered a serious threat to content platforms because advertising is a key revenue driver. On the other hand, people argue that ad blockers improve the advertising industry by pushing the creation of more attractive ads. This paper investigates the impact of ad blockers on a content platform when the advertiser's ad quality decision is taken into account. Methodology/re...

摘要:Problem definition: Behavioral health interventions, delivered through digital platforms, have the potential to significantly improve health outcomes through education, motivation, reminders, and outreach. We study the problem of optimizing personalized interventions for patients to maximize a long-term outcome, in which interventions are costly and capacity constrained. We assume we have access to a historical data set collected from an initial pilot study. Methodology/results: We present a n...

摘要:Problem definition: This paper addresses an appointment scheduling problem involving multiple sequential servers using a distributionally robust optimization (DRO) approach. Two decisions are optimized: the schedule for patient visits and an adjusting policy to rebalance customers' waiting time across servers. Methodology/results: We formulate the distributionally robust appointment scheduling problem in sequential-servers systems using conic optimization, incorporating service time correlatio...
