摘要:Preunemployment search is the fundamental labor market process generating beneficial effects of advance notice. Yet theory indicates that workers receiving notice may not search, whereas others may search even without advance notice. Our weighted results indicate that over one-third of all nonnotified workers still search and over 40% of workers receiving notice do not respond by searching. 摘要:Little is known about the search strategy that employers use in their efforts to fill job vacancies. In this article, we analyze unique micro data to study this search strategy. We conclude that almost all vacancies are filled from a pool of applicants that is formed shortly after the posting of the vacancy. Hence, vacancy durations should be interpreted as selection periods and not as search periods for applicants.

摘要:This article explores a model in which a union confronts many competitive workers, firms, and consumers. Under monopoly unionism, union coverage may be incomplete; then, union wages and employment are insensitive to product demand variation. 摘要:This research utilizes new data to track the earnings effect of the National Supported Work experiment (NSW) on the youth and Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) target groups for 8 years following training. The research indicates that the NSW's effect on the AFDC recipients ranged from $375 to $525 in 1978 dollars during the years 1982-86. 摘要:This article uses aggregate birth year/calendar year level data derived from the Current Population Survey (CPS) to estimate the effect of Social Security wealth on the labor supply of older men in the 1970s and 1980s. The analysis focuses on measuring the impact of the 1977 amendments to the Social Security Act, which created a substantial, unanticipated reduction in Social Security wealth for individuals born after 1916. 摘要:Firms often view job applicant referrals from current employees as more informative than direct applications or referrals through formal labor market intermediaries such as placement firms. We argue that old boy networks reduce employers' uncertainty about worker productivity. 摘要:This article derives three dynamic models of worker effort determination, based on a shirking efficiency wage model, a compensating differentials model, and a union-firm bargaining model. It shows that all of these three models have the same long-run comparative statics but differ in their short-run dynamics.
