摘要:We propose an approach to model assortment optimization problems based on two observations we made from customer browsing history on Taobao. First, most customers consider very few items (no more than five) before purchasing. Second, there exists a sorting of items so that most customer consideration sets are contained in small intervals in this sorting. This sorting can be discovered by the Cuthill-McKee algorithm, which is designed to work with sparse matrices. We encode these two observatio...

摘要:We model social media as collections of users producing and consuming content. Users value consuming content, but due to scarce attention, they may not value all content from other users. Users also value receiving attention, creating the incentive to attract an audience by producing valuable content but also through attention bartering- users mutually becoming each other's audience. Attention bartering shapes substantially the patterns of production and consumption on social media, explains k...

摘要:We examine how investors' investment judgments are jointly affected by two important linguistic features that vary considerably across firms' risk factor disclosures: namely, causal focus-the extent to which managers' disclosures focus on the causes versus consequences of risk events-and specificity, which refers to specific references to names of objects and quantitative values. Results of controlled experiments show that, when the disclosure focus is on risk causes, greater specificity incre...

摘要:This paper examines a grocery retailer's management of a premade food product. The retailer's goal is to maximize a weighted sum of direct profit and customer welfare. Multiple items of the product are produced in batches and immediately displayed for sale. Considering that each item's quality decreases while it sits on the shelf, the retailer chooses the shelf life, whether to issue items in first-in-first-out (FIFO) or last-in-first-out (LIFO) order, whether to timestamp items, and how to pr...

摘要:Motivated by the human-machine interaction such as recommending videos for improving customer engagement, we study human-guided human-machine interaction for decision making with private information. We model this interaction as a two-player turnbased game, where one player (Bob, a human) guides the other player (Alice, a machine) toward a common goal. Specifically, we focus on offline reinforcement learning (RL) in this game, where the goal is to find a policy pair for Alice and Bob that maxi...

摘要:We test how effective a human-algorithm interaction is at stopping users from overdrawing their bank accounts. We use a randomized field experiment and draw our sample from users of a large personal financial management platform operating in the United States and Canada. We find that sending as-needed reminders is effective in and of itself, and the impact is intensified by the human response to the structure of the message. More simple messages are more effective, and the framing of the simpl...

摘要:We examine the prevalence, determinants, and consequences of cheap stock. Practitioners have adopted the label cheap stock to refer to equity-based compensation granted before a firm's IPO that uses a share price below the IPO price. Cheap stock grants have drawn regulators' attention with the Securities and Exchange Commission frequently commenting on issues related to cheap stock when reviewing firms' IPO registration statements. We find that the average firm's IPO price is more than five ti...

摘要:Understanding how preferences are formed in commonplace and natural situations is highly valuable for researchers and practitioners. Here, I develop scroll tracking, a process-tracing method that uses a touch scroll-based responsive mobile web design well suited for studying the cognitive processes behind decision making. The method follows the decision maker's scrolling behavior and records a response curve in the pixel-millisecond coordinate space. To demonstrate the value of response curve ...

摘要:Pay inequality can arise from unequal earnings for the same job or an unequal workload for the same earnings. Although existing research focuses on aversion to unequal earnings, little is known about aversion to unequal workloads, particularly gender differences. We show that female workers are more willing to accept unequal workload than unequal earnings allocations. By contrast, male workers exhibit similar responses to the workload and earnings inequality. The findings highlight that women'...
