摘要:Sequential procedures for the comparison of 2 groups of survival times are considered. The assumption that the 2 survival curves are members of a Lehmann family, i.e., the proportional hazards model, leads to a sequential version of the log rank test. The alternative assumption of a logistic family leads to a sequential modified Wilcoxon test. Theoretical large-sample properties of both methods are assessed for trials of realistic dimensions by computer simulation.

摘要:An individual [human] suffers from several lethal diseases. The cure time is the additional length of life if one of the diseases is eliminated. Some distribution-free estimators of location parameters for cure time are proposed and their asymptotic properties given.

摘要:When selecting the best normal population with the largest mean, how does the probability function of correct selection behave when the number of observations from a given population increases? Answers to this question under a more general setting were provided. A negative and a positive result are given; their proofs involve an application of Slepian''s inequality.

摘要:Suitable linear transformations for preliminary data analysis are available when data consist solely of continuous variables or solely of binary variables. When mixtures of variables are observed, neither technique provides a satisfactory procedure. Some linear transformations for such data are therefore proposed. The aim of the transformations is to simplify structure. An additional motivation comes from the field of discriminant analysis, where it is hoped that dimensionality can be reduced ...

摘要:Methods of estimating Shannon''s information measure and the sampling properties of those estimates are considered. A Bayesian approach was used to suggest 2 possible classes of estimators, and their properties are compared with those of the usual Shannon measure of diversity. Particular attention is given to comparisons involving the MacArthur model of species abundances.

摘要:Williams and Lagakos (1977) considered a class of models for censored [human] survival data in which the censoring and survival mechanisms are related by what is called a constant-sum condition. The constant-sum condition is equivalent to a simple relationship between hazard functions.

摘要:An adaptive procedure is proposed for a comparative clinical trial of 2 treatments in which the response variable has a normal distribution. Patients are assumed to arrive in pairs, and at each stage, after each pair has been treated, a decision is made either to continue to the next stage, or to suspend randomization and to assign patients to the best treatment. This leads to stopping rules which are tabulated for a variety of patient horizons. In general, trials will be relatively short, and...

摘要:The logistic model (Cox, 1970 2) was widely used in the analysis of retrospective studies [of disease incidence]. Two methods of analysis, one based on work by Mantel (1973) and Anderson (1972) and the other based on a conditional likelihood are discussed. The motivation for the 1st method is clarified and some efficiency calculations are presented.
