The paper investigates the relationship between top management team structure (demography) and firm subsequent performance by developing and investigating an intervening group process model of the relationship between team structure and performance.

The paper develops need fulfillment as a measure of organization effectiveness. An interesting implication for organization theory is the findings that suggest that legitimacy does not enhance efficiency and that legitimacy and efficiency may be entirely independent variables.
