摘要:Organizational selection decisions often involve an exchange of information between candidates and decision makers as to why candidates are motivated to work in the given position. Drawing on popular management myths as our overarching framework, we theorize that candidates' expressions of extrinsic motivation lead decision makers to infer that the candidate is less intrinsically motivated, in turn engendering bias against such candidates. We term this effect motivation purity bias, and argue ...

摘要:It is both important and challenging to gain influence within geographically diverse teams. We argue that the emotions team members experience in their initial team meetings moderate the effect of geographical dissimilarity on their perceived influence on team decisions over time. Specifically, we contrast social identity theory-based arguments that geographical dissimilarity negatively influences perceived influence with self-categorization theory-based arguments that there is a positive rela...

摘要:We know that individuals' identities can become intertwined with institutions through processes of identification. But what happens when individuals need or desire to disentangle their identities from institutions after identification has taken place? In this paper, I examine previously incarcerated men's efforts to de-identify with the institutional logics associated with prison as they transition back into society. While past work has tended to characterize de-identification efforts as ultim...

摘要:Process studies of organizational and strategic change have drawn attention to the dynamics that generate such change, but we still know little about how discovery unfolds within change. A field study of efforts to create a new system for delivering inpatient medical care revealed that surprises and discoveries, and constructively oriented responses to them, occurred continuously throughout organizational change, not merely at the outset. Seeking to understand this empirical puzzle, I drew on ...

摘要:Scholars have investigated how shareholder activism by institutional investors- organizations that manage money on behalf of clients-directly shapes the actions of firms that are targeted for activism. We shift attention to an indirect process we call portfolio spillover-the extent to which activist behavior targeted toward a firm in an investor's portfolio of holdings influences actions by other firms that are not presently targeted for activism. We examine portfolio spillover by extending th...

摘要:Kin ties are all but ubiquitous in new firms. However, their effects on performance are not straightforward, as they can provide new firms with advantages (enhanced coordination and cooperation) as well as disadvantages (reduced diversity, nepotism concerns, and the possible spillover of personal conflict). As kin ties may have both positive and negative implications for performance, a contingency approach to the performance of new firms is valuable. We develop such an approach by relating dif...

摘要:Multiple theories addressing firms' reactions to exchange partner misconduct coalesce to depict a trade-off. On the one hand, maintaining commitments to transgressors poses negative spillover risks, so theories posit firms are more likely to avoid such risks by ending commitments as negative spillover rises. On the other hand, exchange relationships often create embedded value, so theorizing also posits firms are more likely to avoid risking loss by maintaining commitments as relationships are...

摘要:This paper uses evidence from the historical African slave trade to extend prior theory linking modern firm ownership structure to institutions and social capital. We argue that institutions and social capital are not simply predictors of ownership structure but can also be historically persistent mechanisms through which past traumatic shocks to society shape modern businesses. Using data from over 30,000 firms across 41 sub-Saharan countries, we show that firms in areas that suffered high hi...

摘要:Research has shown that family motivation exerts an energizing effect on employee performance. Challenging this, we argue that family motivation is a double-edged sword with both an energizing and a debilitating effect on employee performance, depending on the performance criterion in question. Specifically, drawing upon self-determination theory and the hard work versus smart work framework, we hypothesize that family motivation is positively related to employee productivity via enhanced work...

摘要:We examine how political risk influences partner selection in multipartner alliances, and consequently their diversity. We propose a two-stage theoretical model-first, a lead firm is selected to lead the alliance; second, the lead firm selects other partners- and we argue that political risk affects both stages. In the first stage, firms with knowledge of and influence in the project country are selected to lead projects in countries with high political risk. In the second stage, the lead firm...
