摘要:We use unique workplace and employee-level data to evaluate a major UK government pilot program to increase qualification-based, employer-provided training for low-qualified employees. We evaluate the program's effect using a difference-in-differences approach. Using data on eligible employers and workers we find no evidence of a statistically significant effect on the take-up of training in the first 3 years of the program. 摘要:Gibbons and Katz's asymmetric information model of the labor market predicts that wage losses following displacement should be larger for layoffs than for plant closings. This was borne out in their empirical work. In this article, we examine how the difference in wage losses across plant closing and layoff varies with race and gender. 摘要:Although economic theory predicts an inverse relation between relative wages and immigration-induced supply shifts, it has been difficult to document such effects. The weak evidence may be partly due to sampling error in a commonly used measure of the supply shift, the immigrant share of the workforce. 摘要:This article examines how the increase in the incarceration of black men and the sex ratio imbalance it induces shape the behavior of young black women. Combining data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics and the Current Population Survey to match male incarceration rates with individual observations over two decades, I show that black male incarceration lowers the odds of black non-marital teenage fertility while increasing young black women's school attainment and early employment. 摘要:We find that about 40% of a cohort of young Canadian men have been employed at some time with an employer for which their father also worked, and 6%-9% have the same employer in adulthood. The intergenerational transmission of employers is positively related to paternal earnings, particularly at the very top of the earnings distribution, and to the presence of self-employment income and the number of employers with which the father has had direct contact.
