Hill and Severo (1969) and Kryscio (1972) present approximations to the maximum likelihood estimator of the infection rate of the simple stochastic epidemic model. These approximations, valid under some restrictions on the data set, use a table published by Hill and Severo (1969). We give here an algebraically simpler approximation, which does not use an auxiliary table and may be applied to all data sets.
