摘要:It is well known that both types of estimates are efficient and best asymptotically normal for the theory of large samples. This paper presents a sampling investigation of the bias and variance of these estimates in small samples, the only real statistical samples. The results indicate that the minimum chi-square (MC) estimate has a uniformly lower variance than the maximum likelihood estimate, although the bias of the former is usually somewhat larger. The biases, however, are small and for a...

摘要:Tables of upper and lower limits on the upper 5 per cent and 1 per cent points of the distribution are presented. The method of com-putation and the reliability of the tables are described, and approximations which may be used to supplement the tables are derived and discussed. Examples of the use of the tables are given with special attention devoted to their use for multiple significance testing on a set of means.

摘要:Positive Bernoulli and Poisson variables result when the zero class either does not exist or cannot be observed. These tables give the expected value of the reciprocal of such variables for p = .01 to p = .99 and sample sizes from 2 to 30 in the Bernoulli distribution and for means from .01 to 20 in the Poisson distribution. The preparation and use of the tables is discussed.

摘要:Some (large sample) significance points are tabulated for a distribution-free tsst of goodness of fit which was introduced earlier by the authors. The test, which uses the actual observations without grouping, is sensitive to discrepancies at the tails of the distribution rather than near the median. An illustration is given, using a numerical example used previously by Birnbaum in illustrating the Kolmogorov test.

摘要:In multiple regression problems two popular practices involve fallacies. One is the procedure of eliminating terms whose estimated regression coefficients do not differ significantly from zero. The other is making confidence interval statements about individual coefficients with the implication that the associated probability applies simultaneously to all coefficients. With the purpose in mind of avoiding these fallacies, the author discusses methods of making joint confidence interval stateme...

摘要:It is shown that no single method of combining independent tests of significance is optimal in general, and hence that the kinds of tests to be combined should be considered in selecting a method of combination. A number of proposed methods of combination are applied to a particular common testing problem.. It is shown that for such problems, Fisher''s method and a method proposed by Tippett have an optimal property.

摘要:This is appendix G of a monograph by these authors on Statistical Problems of the Kinsey Report, where reference is to the first book on the human male. To support various statements made in the body of the report, descriptions of different types of samples and common pitfalls encountered in sample analyses have been discussed at length in this appendix. Practically every aspect of sampling theory has been included. Special attention is given to the concept of probability sampling and to the p...

摘要:This is a review paper covering certain research in the field of regression analysis. Emphasis is placed on problems associated with the presence of autocorrelated errors in dependent variates. Topics covered include general research, tests of significance for autocorrelation, estimation when autocorrelation is present and the use of autoregressive models. A bibliography of 65 references is appended.

摘要:The circular normal distribution is described and procedures are given for its application. Examples are taken from geophysical, vital and economic statistics. To facilitate calculations a table of the circular normal probability differences is included. There is some discussion of unsolved problems.
