摘要:In decentralized governance, quadratic voting (QV)-where the cost of acquiring voting power is convex-optimally aggregates voter preferences, outperforming simpler linear voting (LV) mechanisms when voters have complete information. But what if they do not? We show that uncertainty not only breaks QV optimality but can also cause it to underperform LV. Intuitively, this is because cost convexity can disincentivize betterinformed voters from adequately conveying their private information. The o...

摘要:Amid ongoing policy and managerial debates on keeping humans in the loop of artificial intelligence (AI) decision-making processes, we investigate whether human involvement in AI-based service production benefits downstream consumers. Partnering with a large savings bank in Europe, we produced pure AI and human-AI collaborative investment advice, which we passed to the bank customers and investigated the degree of their advice taking in a field experiment. On the production side, contrary to c...

摘要:This paper examines unintended consequences of enforcing a curve on performance rankings. I examine a multinational company where some employees are downgraded from the top levels of rankings due to a strict recognition cutoff. I show that downgraded employees are at least 34% more likely to voluntarily exit, and that attempts by the organization to manage employee concerns, particularly regarding concerns of fairness, envy, and self-image, do not have the intended retention effect. Underrecog...

摘要:We consider a two-sided marketplace in which a market operator sells services to clients and buys services from vendors. The market operator determines the prices dynamically for both clients and vendors. Services are transacted in discrete units called jobs, and the jobs are characterized by their types, service deadlines, client prices, and vendor prices. Jobs are submitted by clients to the marketplace, and the market operator then lists the available jobs. Vendors can view the available jo...

摘要:We exploit staggered releases of satellite data on parking lot traffic across U.S. retailers and conduct the stacked Poisson regression to identify the causal effect of big data availability on corporate voluntary disclosure. We document a significant decrease in management good news forecasts following the satellite data release, whereas bad news forecasts are unaffected. The asymmetric decrease cannot be explained by the demand-side substitution hypothesis. Our evidence suggests that the sup...

摘要:A stark contrast exists between the stated preferences of politicians in the so-called blue states (Democrats) and those in red states (Republicans) on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) matters. We examine whether these polarized political stances are reflected in the investment strategies of respective states' pension funds. We examine a Texas directive that the state agencies divest from investment companies that profess a pro-ESG stance and allegedlyboycott energy stocks. We find ...

摘要:Peer networks, such as enterprise social networks (ESNs), can facilitate knowledge transfer across employees. However, such systems can also lead to information overload or difficulty in finding useful information. We examine data from a natural field experiment where a retailer introduced a system for sharing best practices (SSBP) in an existing online peer network, a control mechanism that enables easy access to well-organized best practices from high-performing units. The SSBP did not have ...

摘要:Real-time decisions are usually irrevocable in many contexts of online decision making. One common practice is delaying real-time decisions so that the decision maker can gather more information to make better decisions. For example, in online retailing, there is typically a time delay between when an online order is received and when it gets picked and assembled for shipping. However, decisions cannot be delayed forever. In this paper, we study this fundamental trade-off and aim to theoretica...

摘要:Geographic inequalities in healthcare access extend beyond rural-urban divides include socioeconomic, racial, and other disparities. Proximity to hospitals, clinics, healthcare providers, and pharmacies varies widely, posing a challenge in deciding where strategically locate such facilities. Demand for each service depends on local population health, individual preferences, provider capacity, and other factors. This study introduces a novel structural estimate-then-optimize (SETO) framework, c...

摘要:Large, generalist, technology firms-so-called big-tech firms-powerful in their primary market, routinely enter secondary markets consisting of specialist firms. Naturally, one might expect a specialist firm to be fiercely protective of its data as a way to maintain its market position in the secondary market. Counter to this intuition, we demonstrate that a specialist firm willingly shares its market data with an intruding generalist. We do so by developing a model of cross-market competition ...
