摘要:Research SummaryThis study investigates how producers' status shapes their strategies for category shifting of their artists. Unlike prior research emphasizing its limitations, we argue that in creative industries, category shifting can offer substantial advantages. Focusing on producer-driven markets, we propose that middle-status producers align artists with market-dominant categories, while high-status ones pursue periodic radical shifts. However, for female artists, producers' influence on...

摘要:Research SummaryThis study investigates how sales and employment growth shape employee job satisfaction in startups. Grounded in Penrosean growth theory and related literature, we propose an inverted U-shaped relationship, where excessive growth triggers the Penrose Effect and impairs employee job satisfaction. Analysis of multilevel data reveals modest support for this relationship in employment growth, which is stronger for firms undergoing rapid workforce expansion. Exploratory text analysi...

摘要:Research SummaryWe study how humans learn from artificial intelligence (AI), leveraging an introduction of an AI-powered Go program (APG) that unexpectedly outperformed the best professional player. We compare the move quality of professional players to APG's superior solutions around its public release. Our analysis of 749,190 moves demonstrates significant improvements in players' move quality, especially in the early stages of the game where uncertainty is highest. This improvement was acco...

摘要:Research SummaryThis study examines whether U.S. corporate executives would adopt a stronger stakeholder orientation if constraints imposed by shareholder litigation risk were relaxed. Leveraging the staggered adoption of Universal Demand (UD) laws across states as a quasi-experimental setting, we test whether reduced litigation risk leads to managers prioritizing broader stakeholder initiatives. We find that firms increase stakeholder-focused efforts following UD law adoption, with this shift...

摘要:Research SummaryComplications arise when stakeholders with heterogeneous and potentially misaligned preferences are considered in corporate decisions. This paper examines how high-level decision-making corporate forums, such as boards, can address such heterogeneous claims. We identify three corporate stakeholder governance types depending on the externalities that they generate (which can consider the contributing stakeholders or encompass a broader set of stakeholders affected by the company...

摘要:Research SummaryWe explore how dominant coalitions' political goals influence firms' responses to performance feedback, introducing the concept of political slack. We propose that dominant coalitions use opportunities created by strong firm performance to make changes that reinforce their dominance while making defensive maneuvers to neutralize threats to their dominance posed by poor performance. A dominant coalition's ability to execute such strategic moves hinges on how much political slack...

摘要:Research SummaryRankings often create tiered status hierarchies-for example, top, middle, and lower status tiers-of the ranked organizations. We study how an organization's position within a tier, particularly near tier boundaries, influences its competitive behavior. We propose a tier-aspiration effect, where those at the top of a lower tier pursue more and riskier competitive actions to advance to the higher tier, and a tier-maintenance effect, where those at the bottom a tier engage in more...

摘要:Research SummaryResearch underscores the importance of innovation ecosystems-or the larger group of firms producing components and complements-to the ability of focal firms to create value with an innovation. However, how ecosystems emerge and evolve remains unexplored. In a question-based examination of the solar photovoltaic ecosystem, we observe that ecosystems emerge earlier than predicted through the transfer of ecosystem elements, in a process of re-specialization, and ecosystem roles fr...

摘要:Research SummaryA key strategic challenge is balancing exploration and exploitation. When individuals' exploration activity is guided by problemistic search, should managers encourage high aspirations? Past work has shown that optimal aspiration (the aspiration level that leads to the highest level of performance in the long run) is lower in more turbulent environments. This past work assumes that aspirations are specified as absolute performance, but search is often triggered by performance s...

摘要:This article adopts the lens of ingroup bias to study why regulatory firms tasked with enforcing regulatory compliance may underperform in their duties. We theorize that ingroup bias can lead regulatory agents to grant unwarranted trust to ingroup clients with whom they share salient characteristics, resulting in less stringent inspections for these clients compared to outgroup clients. We further examine how this effect is moderated by inspectors' professionalism, a human capital dimension re...
