摘要:Research SummaryIn market networks, firms regularly seek partners with needed expertise, but these partners often work with the firms' competitors. How such second-order competitive overlap affects partner selection is unclear. Prior theory assumes firms view networks as pipes and emphasizes flows of competitor information via the shared partner as key in partner selection. We propose that firms also view networks as prisms and use competitive overlap as a signal of a potential partner's exper...

摘要:Research SummaryWe study how unique firm technology influences M&A activity. Using a text-based network approach, we map each firm's position relative to every other firm in technology space to measure the uniqueness of its technology portfolio. Our findings indicate that firms with more unique technology portfolios become prime acquisition targets, particularly for close competitors within the same product market segments. These competitors seek to reduce competition and incorporate unique te...

摘要:Research has established that organizations benefit from optimal distinctiveness, that is, being sufficiently similar to and different from competitors. However, we know less about producers' strategic positioning choices to establish optimally distinctive identities. We explore this question through a qualitative study of chef-owners who started their own restaurants after training with well-known mentors. We identify two trajectories followed by chefs to establish optimal distinctiveness-leg...

摘要:Research SummaryWe develop an ex ante measure of commercial potential of science, an otherwise unobservable variable driving the performance of innovation-intensive firms. To do so, we rely on large language models and neural networks to predict whether scientific articles will influence firms' use of science. Incorporating time-varying models and the quantification of uncertainty, the measure is validated through both traditional methods and out-of-sample exercises, leveraging a major univers...

摘要:Research SummaryWe investigate the role of organizational structure in influencing internal capital reallocations. Despite the importance of flexible capital reallocation, empirical evidence suggests remarkably high levels of stability in these decisions. Adopting a behavioral perspective, we focus on information processing demands faced by boundedly rational decision-makers as an antecedent of such decision patterns. We argue, and provide evidence, that centralization of decision rights, whic...

摘要:Research Summary What human capital do established organizations need to bring new ideas to market? Combining Danish registry and Community Innovation Survey data, we document a robust positive relationship between hiring former founders and firms' sales from innovation. Entrepreneurs join smaller, younger firms (which exhibit larger effects), managerial skills and external industry founding experience matter, while other selection or human capital-based explanations appear muted. Founder hire...

摘要:Research Summary Research on performance feedback presents conflicting views on how above-aspiration performance influences organizational change. Some studies argue that it constrains change due to a lack of organizational motivation, while others suggest that it enables change by expanding managerial discretion. Reconciling these perspectives, we suggest that managers' narcissistic tendencies can fundamentally alter how a firm responds to above-aspiration performance. We theorize and find ev...

摘要:Research SummaryThe lead independent director (LID) position was adopted primarily to increase the efficiency of the monitoring function of the board. However, evidence of whether and how LIDs influence board monitoring has been limited. We apply and test the theoretical quad model in the context of the LID to examine whether selecting a qualified LID helps improve monitoring within the board. We argue that when a board appoints a qualified LID, it improves overall board monitoring, along with...

摘要:Research SummaryMimetic products like fake wood and fake meat pose a dilemma for producers. On the one hand, their core value lies in faithfully replicating a real referent. On the other hand, they must differentiate themselves. I explore this tension through a qualitative historical investigation of the first electronic musical organs: The Orgatron was a low-cost close imitation of the pipe organ, whereas the Hammond was a lesser imitation that attempted to augment the pipe organ. Ironically,...

摘要:Research SummaryWhile prior research has examined organizational- and CEO-level antecedents to mergers and acquisitions (M&A) capabilities, less is known about how those below the CEO may shape the ways in which firms conduct acquisitions. In this study, I argue that Corporate Development Executives (CDEs), the specialized executives who lead M&A efforts inside companies, also play an important role in the M&A process. Through a hand-collected dataset on CDEs in S&P 500 information technology ...
