摘要:This article examines wage determination among union and nonunion truck drivers using the 96 monthly Current Population Surveys for 1983-90. Union density in the previously regulated for-hire sector of the trucking industry fell from about 60% during the regulatory period of the 1970s to about 25% by 1990. Union log wage premiums fell from 0.40 in the 1970s to 0.30 or below in the 1980s. Longitudinal estimates from multiple panels for 1983-84 through 1989-90 suggest far smaller union premiums,...

摘要:This article analyzes the intergenerational mobility of immigrants. Using the 1940-70 censuses, the study reveals an important link between the earnings of immigrants and the earnings of their American-born children. Although there is some regression toward the mean, the earnings of second-generation Americans are strongly affected by variables describing economic conditions in the source countries of their parents. 摘要:This article provides an overview of the Canadian Unemployment Insurance (UI) program, including its evolution, salient features, relative size, and knowledge about its labor market impacts. Understanding of these impacts is limited, and we conclude that an ''event-study'' approach is a promising way to further this knowledge. 摘要:Since 1976 the gender gap in wages on average declined by about 1 % per year. This article focuses on identifying the factors underlying this trend. Three data sets are analyzed-the Current Population Survey, the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, and the National Longitudinal Survey. We find that convergence in measurable work-related characteristics (schooling and work experience) explains one-third to one-half the narrowing. 摘要:We analyze divorce settlements made by a cohort of whites who graduated from high school in 1972. The effects of spouses' incomes on the divorce transfer are estimated and used to simulate the welfare effects of divorce on husbands, wives, and children under alternative assumptions about marriage contracts and the ability of a couple to continue coordinating resources in the aftermath of divorce. 摘要:We survey unemployment insurance (UI) in the United States and provide new evidence on the UI payroll tax. Most UI receipt is due to firms that pay part of the UI costs of their layoffs, but weak experience rating leads most firms to pay considerably less than the full costs. Industries consistently receiving subsidies from the UI system are construction, manufacturing, and mining. 摘要:Using union contract and industry wage survey data, this article examines the effect of discounting on cooperative bargaining behavior by unions and firms. Game theory predicts that higher discount rates raise the temptation to defect from cooperation.
