摘要:This article examines whether the Mortensen-Pissarides matching model with productivity changes can explain the time pattern of wage inequality. The main finding is that the model produces counterfactual results. The main source of failure seems to be the exogenous matching function and/or the exogenous surplus share, neither of which allows firms to use wage policies to direct workers' searches.

摘要:This study examines the effects of teen alcohol use and availability on educational attainment. We demonstrate that teens who faced a lower minimum legal drinking age (MLDA) were substantially more likely to drink. However, we find that changes in MLDA had small and statistically insignificant effects on educational attainment. 摘要:Over the past 3 decades, the U. S. Temporary Help Services (THS) industry grew five times more rapidly than overall employment. Contemporaneously, courts in 46 states adopted exceptions to the common law doctrine of employment at will that limited employers' discretion to terminate workers and opened them to litigation. 摘要:Using microdata for 22 countries over the 1985-94 period, we find that more compressed male wage structures and lower female net supply are both associated with a lower gender pay gap, with an especially large effect for wage structures. Reduced-form specifications indicate that the extent of collective bargaining coverage is also significantly negatively related to the gender pay gap. 摘要:Using 1998 data, we show that the gender log wage gap in Sweden increases throughout the wage distribution and accelerates in the upper tail. We interpret this as a strong glass ceiling effect. 摘要:The aim of this article is to analyze the effects of housing discrimination on the wages and unemployment rates of black workers. The unemployment effect is first analyzed using a simple minimum-wage model. An efficiency-wage model is then adopted in order to endogenize both unemployment and wages. Under both models, suburban housing discrimination leads to a higher unemployment rate for blacks in the central city than in the suburbs. 摘要:This article examines employer demand for welfare recipients using new employer survey data. The results suggest that demand is high but sensitive to business cycle conditions.
