What Reasoning Do Frontline Professionals Use Around Citizen-Clients' Socioeconomic Status: Exploring the Mechanisms

摘要

This paper examines socioeconomic status (SES) as an indicator for decision-making among frontline professionals in healthcare, focusing on general practitioners (GPs). Aside from research on stereotypes, we know little about how frontline professionals reason about SES in decision-making. This study addresses this gap by investigating how GPs use SES to develop care for patients with varying SES backgrounds. Based on qualitative interviews, the study identifies three SES reasonings that are closely intertwined with the status of patients: (1) status preservation reasoning describes how GPs interpret SES cues and status stability in relation to what needs to be preserved, (2) social distance reasoning helps explain how social distance creates a reference point when helping the patient, and (3) together reasoning describes how GPs use patients' busyness and educational level to develop treatment plans together with the patient. This study contributes to the existing literature by distinguishing SES reasonings in frontline professionals' decision-making. Dit artikel onderzoekt socio-economische status (SES) als indicator voor besluitvorming door uitvoerende professionals in de zorg, met een focus op huisartsen. We weten weinig over hoe uitvoerende professionals redeneren over SES in besluitvorming, behalve uit onderzoek naar stereotypen. Deze studie vult deze lacune door te onderzoeken hoe huisartsen SES gebruiken om een behandelplan te ontwikkelen voor pati & euml;nten met verschillende SES-achtergronden. Op basis van kwalitatieve interviews identificeert de studie drie SES-redeneringen die nauw verweven zijn met de status van pati & euml;nten: (1) redenering gericht op statusbehoud gaat in op hoe huisartsen SES-signalen en statusstabiliteit interpreteren in relatie tot wat behouden moet worden, (2) redenering gebaseerd op sociale afstand helpt om te begrijpen hoe sociale afstand een referentiepunt cre & euml;ert tijdens het helpen van de pati & euml;nt, (3) redenering over gezamenlijk zorgen beschrijft hoe huisartsen de drukte en het opleidingsniveau van pati & euml;nten gebruiken bij het gezamenlijk ontwikkelen van behandelplannen. Deze studie draagt bij aan de bestaande literatuur door SES-redeneringen te onderscheiden binnen de besluitvorming van uitvoerende professionals.
