A class of F-passive descriptor systems is introduced, where F is also a descriptor system. Time-domain and frequency-domain characterizations are presented, as well as properties of F-passive systems. The first property is their cascade decomposition, and the second concerns their zeros. For a given system H, an linear matrix inequality based algorithm for obtaining a system F such that system H is F-passive is presented. Connections between F-passive and passive systems are given. A state-feedback transformation of an F-passive descriptor system to an F-passive state-space system is presented. It is shown that F-passive systems can be successively applied to global asymptotic stabilization of a quite general class of nonlinear systems and illustrative examples are given.
