This manuscript provides an innovative and timely examination of an issue which has perplexed holars and managers interested in the application of information technology, ''Can it be shown that investments in information technology improve an organization's financial performance?'' as well as an issue which has interested researchers and managers interested in the application of innovative technologies in general, ''Do economic rewards actually accrue to organizations which are the first to adopt innovative technologies?'' Because of the difficulties of first locating and then effectively analyzing relevant data, the majority of existing evidence regarding such issue tends to be either qualitative or anecdotal in nature. The study's convincing results should probe useful to scholars desiring to examine other technologies or related phenomena and to practitioners involved in the justification of investments in innovative technologies.
