What are we to make of the corporate penchant for downsizing during periods of rising profits? Are the firms doing this adapting to a global economy, cashing out social capital, or just sporting a faddish managerial innovation? This paper suggests why U.S. firms might downsize, illustrated by examples from the 1980s and 1990s.
