摘要:Research SummaryThis study investigates how sales and employment growth shape employee job satisfaction in startups. Grounded in Penrosean growth theory and related literature, we propose an inverted U-shaped relationship, where excessive growth triggers the Penrose Effect and impairs employee job satisfaction. Analysis of multilevel data reveals modest support for this relationship in employment growth, which is stronger for firms undergoing rapid workforce expansion. Exploratory text analysi...

摘要:Research SummaryWe study how humans learn from artificial intelligence (AI), leveraging an introduction of an AI-powered Go program (APG) that unexpectedly outperformed the best professional player. We compare the move quality of professional players to APG's superior solutions around its public release. Our analysis of 749,190 moves demonstrates significant improvements in players' move quality, especially in the early stages of the game where uncertainty is highest. This improvement was acco...

摘要:Research SummaryThis study examines whether U.S. corporate executives would adopt a stronger stakeholder orientation if constraints imposed by shareholder litigation risk were relaxed. Leveraging the staggered adoption of Universal Demand (UD) laws across states as a quasi-experimental setting, we test whether reduced litigation risk leads to managers prioritizing broader stakeholder initiatives. We find that firms increase stakeholder-focused efforts following UD law adoption, with this shift...

摘要:Research Summary CEO dismissal is a high-stakes governance decision, yet its implications for corporate reputations remain underexplored. We develop theory explaining how dismissals damage corporate reputation through perceptual processes that arise from features of and reactions to the practice itself, distinct from effects attributable to dismissal's (much studied) economic and strategic consequences. Drawing on expectancy violation theory, we argue that dismissals become salient and generat...

摘要:Research Summary We study an important, but largely overlooked, non-market strategy used by firms in the enforcement stage of policy: snitching, that is, providing intelligence about potential violations of their rivals in an attempt to persuade regulators to fine them. Building on political marketplace theory, we develop and test a theoretical model of how firms use snitching during regulatory enforcement. We show that in equilibrium, firms snitch when the rival's violations are likely to cau...

摘要:Research Summary The emergence of large language models (LLMs) offers new opportunities for AI integration in research, particularly for data annotation and text classification. However, researchers lack guidance on implementation best practices, as the benefits and risks of these tools remain poorly understood. We develop a foundational framework for effective LLM implementation in management research, providing structured guidance on key decisions throughout the research process. We illustra...

摘要:Research Summary While the influence of CEO characteristics on M&A decisions has long spurred researchers' interest, little attention has been devoted to the ramifications of CEO integrity-the adherence to generally accepted norms and standards. We investigate how CEO integrity influences different stages of the M&A decision process. Specifically, we argue that while CEO integrity reduces self-serving behavior, it may also become a golden cage that constrains CEOs' latitude of action. Accordin...

摘要:Research SummaryComplications arise when stakeholders with heterogeneous and potentially misaligned preferences are considered in corporate decisions. This paper examines how high-level decision-making corporate forums, such as boards, can address such heterogeneous claims. We identify three corporate stakeholder governance types depending on the externalities that they generate (which can consider the contributing stakeholders or encompass a broader set of stakeholders affected by the company...

摘要:Research SummaryWe explore how dominant coalitions' political goals influence firms' responses to performance feedback, introducing the concept of political slack. We propose that dominant coalitions use opportunities created by strong firm performance to make changes that reinforce their dominance while making defensive maneuvers to neutralize threats to their dominance posed by poor performance. A dominant coalition's ability to execute such strategic moves hinges on how much political slack...

摘要:Research SummaryRankings often create tiered status hierarchies-for example, top, middle, and lower status tiers-of the ranked organizations. We study how an organization's position within a tier, particularly near tier boundaries, influences its competitive behavior. We propose a tier-aspiration effect, where those at the top of a lower tier pursue more and riskier competitive actions to advance to the higher tier, and a tier-maintenance effect, where those at the bottom a tier engage in more...
