摘要:Research SummaryFirm growth and its underlying modes are rarely examined on their own, which impedes our understanding of their relative importance, correlations among them and their associations with competition and future performance. We address these using a comprehensive seven-mode decomposition of employment growth in all US firms (2004-2013). We find that organic modes such as opening or closing plants contribute more than transactional modes such as acquisitions and selloffs, and that g...

摘要:Research SummaryDue to their limited reputation as potential employers, startups struggle to generate interest (e.g., applications) from jobseekers. To help mitigate these frictions, employers can proactively reach out to jobseekers. In this study, we examine the relationship between firm-driven search and startups' hiring and retention of young workers. Using a unique empirical setting, we find that firm-driven search is associated with a higher likelihood of hiring. However, candidates sourc...

摘要:Research Summary While prior upper echelon research has shown that overconfident CEOs are beneficial for innovation, less is known about how firms can harness the benefits of these CEOs for breakthrough innovations. To extend this stream of research, we identify crucial board characteristics that enable firms to benefit from overconfident CEOs in the context of promoting breakthrough innovations. Using longitudinal data of US high-tech firms, our results emphasize that overconfident CEOs guide...

摘要:Research Summary While the influence of CEO characteristics on M&A decisions has long spurred researchers' interest, little attention has been devoted to the ramifications of CEO integrity-the adherence to generally accepted norms and standards. We investigate how CEO integrity influences different stages of the M&A decision process. Specifically, we argue that while CEO integrity reduces self-serving behavior, it may also become a golden cage that constrains CEOs' latitude of action. Accordin...

摘要:Research SummaryComplications arise when stakeholders with heterogeneous and potentially misaligned preferences are considered in corporate decisions. This paper examines how high-level decision-making corporate forums, such as boards, can address such heterogeneous claims. We identify three corporate stakeholder governance types depending on the externalities that they generate (which can consider the contributing stakeholders or encompass a broader set of stakeholders affected by the company...

摘要:Research SummaryWe explore how dominant coalitions' political goals influence firms' responses to performance feedback, introducing the concept of political slack. We propose that dominant coalitions use opportunities created by strong firm performance to make changes that reinforce their dominance while making defensive maneuvers to neutralize threats to their dominance posed by poor performance. A dominant coalition's ability to execute such strategic moves hinges on how much political slack...

摘要:Research SummaryRankings often create tiered status hierarchies-for example, top, middle, and lower status tiers-of the ranked organizations. We study how an organization's position within a tier, particularly near tier boundaries, influences its competitive behavior. We propose a tier-aspiration effect, where those at the top of a lower tier pursue more and riskier competitive actions to advance to the higher tier, and a tier-maintenance effect, where those at the bottom a tier engage in more...

摘要:Research Summary Are less hierarchical firms organized around stronger cultures instead? We analyze 1.5 million employee reviews on Glassdoor.com from 23,000 US-based firms, alongside data on managerial hierarchy estimated from 42 million professional social media profiles. Our findings confirm a negative association between managerial hierarchy and organizational culture strength. We explore two potential explanations for this association: Functional equivalence between the two, and culture f...

摘要:Research Summary We examine how firms should allocate their inventors to network locations to achieve their best innovation performance. We use an NK model to model the interactions between key factors that influence a firm's innovation: (a) individuals' embeddedness within the firm's network, (b) individuals' heterogeneity across their search distance as well as their adoption (i.e., imitation) propensity, and (c) the complexity of the firm's landscape. We find that in high-complexity landsca...

摘要:Research has established that organizations benefit from optimal distinctiveness, that is, being sufficiently similar to and different from competitors. However, we know less about producers' strategic positioning choices to establish optimally distinctive identities. We explore this question through a qualitative study of chef-owners who started their own restaurants after training with well-known mentors. We identify two trajectories followed by chefs to establish optimal distinctiveness-leg...
