Looking beyond institutional influences on social entrepreneurs: key issues and an agenda for future IB research on social venture impact

摘要

Stephan, Uhlaner and Stride's (2015) JIBS Decade Award-winning article provides a nuanced understanding of the national contexts that encourage social entrepreneurship. In this commentary, we build on their foundation and discuss the notion of social entrepreneurship further, shifting focus from individual engagement in social entrepreneurship to a consideration of social venture impact. This entails a shift from the individual as the unit of analysis to the social venture. Building on the ten years of social entrepreneurship research since Stephan, Uhlaner and Stride (2015) appeared, we examine the inevitable stakeholder multiplicity of social ventures, and the concomitant mission drift and mission motility that accompany it. We then discuss issues associated with measuring and scaling social venture impact, and options for studying the international factors affecting social venture impact. Throughout the article, we highlight the implications of these ideas for future international business research.
