The national public broadcaster of Japan, NHK, has produced a program as part of its international news coverage, showcasing how one of the project companies is exploring carbon-neutral tile production using war debris in Ukraine. The video crew followed Tagawa Shikkui Labs, a sustainability-driven construction materials company, which recently visited companies in Ukraine as part of an ongoing feasibility study. During this visit, the company aimed to find a local partner for manufacturing and sales to determine the most effective way to contribute to Ukraine. The goal is a partnership in which both parties profit by utilizing local manufacturing capacity and human resources. Debris and waste from buildings destroyed by air strikes are said to have already exceeded 6 million tons, yet methods for disposal remain undermined. The team visited a debris processing site and a number of companies, including a major firm that operates home improvement centers across Ukraine and also manufactures tiles. The Japanese technology could save the massive amounts of energy usually required for firing raw materials. The video also mentions that more than 40 Japanese companies, including Tagawa Shikkui Labs, are participating in the UNIDO project based on the contribution from the Japanese government.
