WTO members examine factors affecting integration of small economies into global trade

WTO members examined key trends regarding the participation of small economies in global trade at a meeting of the Committee on Trade and Development on 14 October. Members said the WTO Secretariat's note was helpful in highlighting the ways that small economies can strengthen their integration into world trade. They noted that high trade costs, heavy reliance on food imports, and multiple vulnerabilities continue to limit the participation of small economies in global trade and that their collective share in global trade remains at 0.8 per cent.WTO members examine factors affecting integration of small economies into global trade

The meeting provided an opportunity for members to continue discussing a report on digital trade and small, vulnerable economies (SVEs), which was presented at a Committee meeting in March. Members reiterated that digitally delivered services are crucial for export diversification. They also emphasized the importance of ensuring that key factors for increasing participation in digital trade - internet access and affordability, and improvement in workforce skills - are achieved across all SVEs. Members further underscored the need for SVEs to make full use of the WTO agreements and other means to foster digital trade growth in their economies.de

At the meeting, members adopted the technical assistance and training plan for 2026-2027,  noting that technical cooperation remains an important function of the WTO's work. The new strategic approach, which includes the use of face-to-face training, virtual activities and so-called blended modes of delivery for technical assistance, was noted. Members also supported   enhanced cooperation with international and regional organizations. The plan, developed in close collaboration with members, will now be considered by the WTO Committee on Budget, Finance and Administration later this month.

The Chair of the Committee, Ambassador Mzukisi Qobo of South Africa, updated members on his ongoing consultations concerning the possibility of holding an informal session on investment climate needs assessment as part of Development Week in November 2025.
