Let G be a linear semisimple real Lie group and H be a reductive subgroup of G. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a nonabelian free discrete subgroup Gamma of G acting properly on G/H. For instance, such a group Gamma does exist for SL(2n, R)SL(2n - 1, R) but does not for SL(2n + 1, R)/SL(2n, R) with n greater than or equal to 1.
