The mean and standard error of [PHI]22, in which the marginal totals are given their population values, have been derived by Pearson and Young. In this paper 1st and 2nd approximations are derived for the mean and standard error of [PHI]12, in which the marginal totals are given their values in the sample. From these results are derived the mean and standard deviation of C2, the coefficient of mean square contingency. Experimental sampling shows good agreement with theory. The distributions of [PHI]12 and C2 are well fitted with Type I curves.
