100 samples of 16 values were drawn experimentally from a Poisson distribution with mean equal to 1. Each sample of 16 was divided into 4 equal subsets. For each sample 2 estimates of the variance of the population were computed, i.e., variance between means of subsets and variance within subsets. The distr. of the ratio of these 2 variances, or F, was compared with the theoretical distr. Agreement between actual and theoretical frequency of F, as measured by x2, was satisfactory. P(x2) was about 0.5.
