摘要:
This is the last part of the article on medical statistics, which discusses the works on this subject of men connected with the medical profession before 1838. The works of the Heberdens, Short, Deparcieux, Struyck, Sissmilch, Hawkins and Farr are described in detail. These men were interested in the ratio of births to deaths, a statistical measure of health, life tables, vital statistics, enumerations of populations, sex ratio, mortality of small and large towns, causes of deaths, effect of vaccination and inoculations, mortality rates for different ages, sickness rates, etc. These writers made very little contributions to the methodology pertaining to statistics. They did call attention to analyses of numerical data and showed how such analyses could be useful to society by pointing out the trends of their age.
