摘要:
Archaeological material from excavations at Castle Hill, Scarborough, revealed, at 3 levels, an early Iron Age village, a Roman signal station and 3 chapels, 1 earlier and the 2 later than the Norman conquest. Various measurements of skulls of these inhabitants were measured and compared with each other, with 7 other British series and with 7 other non-British series. Variabilities, as measured by the standard deviations, and coefficients of variation, were obtained for each of the 37 skull characteristics or measurements and compared with those in the other series. The A. concludes, after many comparisons, that the majority of the individuals from Castle Hill were descendants of an alien pre-conquest community of Scandinavian origin. It is possible that the pop. of the Scarborough type had an appreciable effect in determining the characteristics of modern Yorkshiremen..
