Haldane''s use of inverse probability may be avoided by a direct method of attack in most cases. In the 2-sample problem, with a1 and a2 observed and E(ai) = mi, 2 cases may be handled directly. If the Poisson approximation is valid and a decision is based on the conditional distribution of a1 for fixed a1 + a2, the test involves a binomial distribution.
