A general form of the location and model is considered for mixed continuous and categorical variables observed in a number of different populations, and some special cases of practical interest are cited. The distance between any 2 populations is derived for each of these models. Estimation of parameters in these distance measures is discussed, and the methods are illustrated by application to previously published data.
