The author''s thesis is that the sexually promiscuous [female] differs in many ways from normal girls of the same age. In a previous study of 500 cases admitted to an intensive treatment center, he found the majority below normal intelligence, falling in the defective and borderline mental ranges The group as a whole was scholastically retarded more than a full school year, the 8th grade being the median level completed. In this study he has attempted to match their occupational level with a normal control group of unselected [female] job applicants who applied for work through the U. S. Employment Service during the yrs. of 1941 and 1942. The U. S. E. S. girls were a white group of 225 taken from the St. Louis area with ages ranging from 17 to 30. The mean age level was 22.9 yrs. From the original group of 500 sexually promiscuous [female] [female], he selected 225 whites, also from the St. Louis area, for comparison. They ranged in age from 17 to 35 with a mean age level of 22.8. Hence, on an age basis the groups were equated, the S.D.''s of the distributions being similar also (3.99 and 3.83). From the standpoint of length of service for a single employer, the hospital cases were not as stable as the U. S. E. S. group, the latter having worked twice as long on a given job on the average. The hospital cases were found much more frequently in jobs requiring little or no skill or training. This was evidenced by their complete absence on the professional and managerial level (as compared to 3.16% of the U. S. E. S. group), their comparatively poor representation in the skilled and semi-skilled trades, and their relatively great distribution in the service occupations[long dash]e.g., waitresses, house workers, barmaids, etc. Because work plays so great a role in everyday life, it is suggested that job adjustment be of prime consideration in the rehabilitation programs of these individuals.
