The frequency, intensity, duration, and interaural difference (direction) dimensions of pure tone were evaluated singly and in combination of 3 comparable levels of discriminability in order to determine their relative effectiveness as binary cuing stimuli for an instrument monitoring task. The use of such signals decreased search time and reduced (Ss'') tendencies to be differentially attentive to the various sectors of the information display. No further reduction in search time occurred with 3- and 4-dimensional displays than with 2-dimensional displays. Frequency proved to be the most effective dimension for purposes of cuing. Intensity was least effective. Direction and Duration were of moderate effectiveness.
